The Cybersecurity programme at Impactful powered by LRMG has changed my life! Doing well in such programmes has built my self-esteem and confidence and has enabled me to step into my power.
Frank William Abagnale once said: “Two little mice fell into a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse wouldn’t quit. He continued struggling until he eventually churned the cream into butter and crawled out. Ladies and gentlemen, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.”
Like Frank, I am that second mouse.Where I come from, not everyone believes they can achieve great things. Sometimes, the people we look up to discourage us from chasing our dreams. I have also struggled with self-doubt and feared taking opportunities that came my way. The thought of failing or not being accepted held me back.
I come from Cofimvaba, a small town in the Eastern Cape where young Black people have very few opportunities. I thank God for my mother and my late father. Despite having no formal education, my parents ensured that I understood the importance of a good education.
My parents did everything they could to send my older siblings and me to school using the income from their small spaza shop. Life was not easy, and we sometimes struggled to afford basic necessities such as food and school fees. My mom often said, “Noba ubomi bunganzima buthini, ungaze unikezele kwaye ungaze ubukeke njenge ngxaki zakho,” which means, “No matter how hard life gets, you must never give up or let your problems define you.”
I decided to further my studies while looking for job opportunities. Hope and faith kept me going. After many rejections, I stumbled on this amazing opportunity, and I am where I am today because of it. The Cybersecurity programme at Impactful powered by LRMG has changed my life! Doing well in such programmes has built my self-esteem and confidence and has enabled me to step into my power. The cybersecurity career is intriguing – there is always an opportunity to learn and upskill oneself. Through this programme, I completed on-demand certifications such as Ethical Hacking, Security+ and Cloud+. In addition, I discovered other cybersecurity platforms that helped me continuously improve my knowledge and skills.
Technology is constantly evolving, and cybersecurity has become part of our daily lives. It is such an interesting time to be part of this change. It gives one a sense of purpose as there is always a significant responsibility for defending organisations against emerging threats. The shortage in cybersecurity skills opens up the opportunity for young professionals to take up their career and have more chances in the job market.
It is important that organisations invest in skills development programmes as this ensures that employees are productive and flexible to adopt new solutions based on demand, and that they are able to grow in the professional environment. With skilled employees, organisations stay competitive in the market.
To all the young people out there: look out for Impactful’ course opportunities as they will prepare you for a working environment and provide you with skills that will make you competent in the workplace. These skills are not only technical but also include soft skills. They help individuals understand how to work and interact effectively with other professionals.
May you always remember your goals and ensure that whatever direction you take in life aligns with those goals. My wish is for Impactful powered by LRMG to continue empowering and upskilling young people, especially those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. After all, I believe that a skilled and knowledgeable youth can help build a better tomorrow for society.
